Such utterances disgrace, not only those who mike them, but the congregations that listen to them without rebuking the offender. dally. It is generally understood that both these instances are the direct outcome of the anti-Semitic movement and are intended as an evidence of the igood will toward Jews of their Chris-Kan neighbors. churth, he pointed the way to godliness.

"During the many years I have been In tills community, we were throwu into frequent peisonal contact. My associations with him are among tho roost delightful memories of my vWe cannot at this moment estimate properly the loss which has been sustained. Our hope should bo tha, the surviving Khali follow his path. My prayer is tliat.

In the' presence of Divine Providence, Cardinal Gibbons will receive the rich reward for his countless deeds of STOPPING THE SALE OF FORD'S PAPER. The Times-Star of last Saturday had in editorial which read as follows: Council and the Dearborn Independent. Council is expected to vote next. Tuesday on the proposed ordinance to bar Henry Ford's periodical, the "Dearborn Independent," from sale ou the streets of Cincinnati. Council's sense of humor, if not Its Americanism, should prevent it from enaciinsr such a law.

Henry Ford is entitled to his opinion of the Jews, just as the Jews are entitled to their opinion of Henry Ford. Articles attacking or criticizing Protestants, Catholics, Christian Scientists, etc, appear in publications freely circulated In town. No religion is Immune from opea discussion. The constitutional provisions against an established church and for religious toleration cover tliis. If Council has the power to bar the "Dt-aHwrn Independent," it has power to bar all Democratic papers, if it happens to be Republican, or all Republican papers, if it happens to be Democratic.

It could bar all radical papers when it was conservative and all conservative papers when It was radical. We take it that the ordinance to bar the "Dearborn Indeir.dent" could lie knocked out in the courts If it ever went ilia: far. But Council should not pa? the ordinance. It is small town stuff, and thoroughly un-American. The Times-Star's editorial Indicates a misunderstanding of the situation.

The Dearborn Independent is not attacking Judaism, it is defaming the Jews. There is no question of religions involved. Nor does the analogy sought to be established with political controversies apply. The Dearborn Independent articles are calculated to create the fiercest race hatred and to stir up breaches of the peace. Its sale on the streets has been prohibited by the authorities of Chicago, Denver, St.

Louis, to say nothing of those of Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo In our own state, and many other cities. Just why the prevention of the circulation of deliberate libels of the most malicious kind should be considered un-American by anyone, it Is difficult to say. Whether or not the City Council should act is a question upon which opinions may well vary. New Boeks "The Voice of Jerusalem." By Is- i rael Zangwill, author of "The Dreanv ers of the Ghetto" and "The Next Re-! ligion," etc The Mscmillan New York. Israel Zangwill Is too well known to me ivauers oi tne Israelite to neeu any special Introduction.

Everything that comes from his pen Is read with interest and 's usually accepted as authoritative. "The Voice of Jerusalem" is the first collection of his Jewish essays which he lias published and it includes only the best of Ills works In this field. His subjects are as varied as are Jewish interests. He treals of the origin of anti-Semitism, Interprets Judaism In modern terms, discusses the stage Jew, puts Mr. Wells In his place, puts Poland in Its true light before the world and presents a number of original Jewish poems.

In fact, in "Tim Voice of Jerusalem," Mr. Zangwill covers the entire field of Jewish Interest more nearly than has ever been done before by any Jewish writer. "While Europe Waitn for Peace." By Pierrepont B. Noyes, American Rhineland Commissioner, April, 1919-1920. The Macmillan Company, New York.

The struggles of Europe, during tho past two years, are explained here frankly and clearly. Every American wants to know the facts it gives, and wants them from some one who was personally and officially concerned in the matters In Mr. Noyes was the American member of the Rhineland Commission to which the Allies gave supreme authority in the occupied territory of Germany. Not the least startling statement in the book is Mr. Noyes' insistence (hat the United States must cancel France's debt.

He takes Issue with Mr. Keynes's suggestion that tho British debt also should be cancelled. It is not less interesting than such other points ns the revelation of the Intrigues which sought to separate the Illilue provinces from Germany, the consideration of the consequences of possible French military invasion of Germany and the results of a fifteen years' occupation of the German Rhine provinces. But these are only hints at the Intensely interesting fields covered by this book, which offers us a chance to know the truth about present conditions In Europe. Lucien Wolfs exposition of the utter baselessness, in fact of the myth of the Jewish menace in world affairs and the truth about the forged protocols of the elders of Zlon is the most convincing document tltnt has been presented on this subject.

A copy of this (price 00 cents) con bo had from the publishers, the Mncnilllan Company, New York. Every reader of the Israelite should have a copy for his own information and give the pamphlet the widest possible circulation. Another valuable contribution along the same lines is "The History of a Lie, the Protocols of the Wise Men of Zlon," a study by Herman Bernstein, the well known writer, more especially In European Topics. "The History of a Lie" exposes one of the most dangerous literary forgeries by which anti-Semitic propagandists have endeavored to injure and discredit the Jews throughout the world. The price of this is, also, 50 cents, and it may be had of the publishers, J.

S. Ogilvie Publishing Company, New York. ANOTHER JEWISH CONGRESS. About two hundred delegates from various parts of the country assembled last week at the Hotel Astor, New York, to formulate plans for making a permanent body by the Provisional Committee of the American Jewish Congress. They decided that tho election of officers for the permanent Congress should be made by popular vote and the election to be held on June 10, simultaneously all over the United States.

Three weeks prior to this date, the Nominations Committee Is scheduled to meet and decide on the candidates for election. The Congress Itself Is to be permanently organized before October 31, when a general convention will take place. In the absence of Nathan Straus, Chairman of the Congress Committee, the presiding officer was Morris ltolh-enberg, Chairman of the Executive Committee. He received the work of the Congress during the year and told of the conditions of the Jews In Europe who are facing starvation and death because of race prejudice. "In spite of treaty guarantees for equal rights of minority nationalities In Eastern Europe," he said, scries of pogroms, excesses and attacks upon life and property of every character have been perpetrated on the Jews in many countries, the like of which is unequnled even In our long history of misfortune.

The wave ot anti-Semitism has engulfed not only those countries In Eastern Europe whero wo woro accustomed to seeking it, but has shown itsolf In amazing proportions In our own country. "The Ukrnlnc presents a problem so stupendous ns to seem almost hopeless. In Soviet Russia it appears that Jewish organizations nra bolng disrupted and that Jewish cultural and spiritual say If the Christian wishes to maintain good repute, let him cease to be a highwayman, a murderer, quit burning negroes alive, keeping disreputable resorts, etc. would that be fairi Would the Herald and Presbyter not think that to saddle offenses committed by a negligible portion of Christians, at least by birth, upon the entire Christian body would be a gre3t injustice. Why should not the rule work bUi ways But this is an old story and there Is little use in talkies about it.

A women's committee of Warsaw Jews recently applied to the American Joint Distribution Committee for funds to establish a special hospital for the treatment of women who. have suffered mistreatment in pogroms. It is to the people whose horrible crimes made this appeal necessary that the Allies are trying to find a pretext for turning over the tens of thousands of defenseless Jens and Jewes-es in Upper Silesia, in spite of the fact th3t at the plebiscite recently held under the Allies- direct control and supervision, the preference of the inhabitant? to remain a part of Germany was expressed by a majority of over two-thirds, that is, by a vote of more than two to one. The Silesians protested against hav-: ing their country annexed to Poland, in spite of promises and threats. Should the Council of the Allies yield to Poland's demand it will be one more act to its discredit.

The progressive viciousness of Henry Ford should prove an interesting study for pliychologists. His credulity is almost beyond belief and bis enormous, suddenly acquired wealtb furnishes him with an almost unlimited power for evil. He allowed himself to be persuaded by Itosika Sehwim-mer that be had It in his power to stop the war. Hence the peace ship folly. Some one else persuaded him that there was a conspiracy of Jews to rule the world and he went to work to counteract It.

Again be found that he had been made a fool of. Were he not what be is. he would have stopped there ami if a high-minded man, would have acknowledged his error and sought to make reparation for the wrong he had done. But Ford Is not that kind of man. Instead of punishing those who misled him, he seeks to Justify himself by vituperation of his victims and accusing them of every possible wrong-doing.

Of course, his very recklessness and the utter lack of plausibility of his accusations carry their own antidote. Ford Is not a menace, but he Is a most abominable nuisance and It Is to be hoped some way will be found to abate him. The latest number of the B'nai B'ritli I News contains an editorial appeal to I the Jewish press of America to change the tone In which it lias been speaking of Poland. It points out that the B'nai B'rlth have a number of active lodges In Poland, whose membership comprises the most intelligent and socially prominent element. These brethren, the B.

B. News says, "inform us tliat their work becomes very difficult, owing to the provocation of the best In-tcntloned circles In Poland at the way In which the American Jewish press treats the new republic." In view of the fact that at best only a small portion of the Jews of Poland will be able to emigrate, the writer thinks It were best to Ignore what has occurred and hope for the best In the future. Dealing with almost any nation under the sun, this would be excellent advice, but there Is nothing In the news received each day to Indicate that Poland has really exeprlenced a change of heart and that the authorities are making an honest endeavor to treat the Jewish Poles with ordinary humanity and accord them those rights which we consider inalienable. If, however, the writer of the B'nai B'rlth article Is cor rect, Ihen Mr. Morgcntliau Is fully justified In the course which he has pursued.

Kissing the hand tliat smites us Is not ai agreeable task, but in dealing with Poles, perhaps to do so ns man to wan Is Impossible and they may have to be treated like unreasoning brutes, and conked Into good behavior. If the salvation and future peace of our co-rellglonlsts In Poland depend on this, we will have to shape our courses accordingly, but it is a most humiliating course to pursue. It Is like paying and thanking the executioner for his blows. It has often been said that there Is nothing new under the sun. But, apparently, this is not altogether true.

"The Jews" have been charged with practically every offense conceivable, but it remains for a well, we shall not call names the Itev. B. Hart, pastor of the First Methodist Church York, to charge "the Jews" with being the prime movers for procuring the enactment of the daylight saving law. Aside from this, the licv. Dr.

Hart accuses the Jews of all sorts of things. Their principal offense, however, seems to be tliat "These men who want to sweep awny our Institutions of the Sabbath and who would change the clocks to give the world more time for pleasure, arc not Christians. They do not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ They pass him up by saying, 'He was a good and there he ends with them." However, In another part of his address Dr. Hart tells what the underlying cause of his outburst really Is. He said: 'Two more hours of sunshine will close the churches for three months 'In the year.

The automobile has killed the Sunday evening services and God knows we have little religion enough lefv ns It Is." In this connection the Israelite's correspondent says: "The article by nev. Hart has roused York Jews as he presides over the largest and most influential Methodist church In the city. The criticism of the same by Mr. A. B.

Farquhar, a national figure, and the finest type of the Ideal American citizen, printed March 17, Is most gratifying, and Is another proof thht the Jews have faithful friends and defenders outside the doors of the synugog." It Is difficult to see wherein the ethical difference lies between such fanatics ns Dr. Hart and, say, the lynchers who burn negroes In the South. It Is of men of such mentality and moral Dr. Sehmarya Levin, world Zionl leader, said that the fact that the are not settled In their own homeffi makes it dillicult for "ignorant like Mr. Ford" to unders6 ltabbl Samuel Reich, Chief Kabbi of Sprague, and Rabbi Stephen also spoke.

a Letters From People Poultney Biglow Abuses the Jews Editor Isoaeute: Sirt-I am taking the liberty writing you that the Jewish Community may be advised of an addre. given by Mr. Poultney Biglow. Biglow was recently Invited by th Commonwealth Club of this citv tX discuss the question of the Far East In the course of bis remarks, he abu4d not only the Irish and the Catholics but grossly Insulted the Jews. So out rageous was his abuse of the courtesv of the Club, that at a following meeting of the Club the Chairman (a Gentile) was called upon to repudiate hi remarks.

In view of the fact that such a man is likely to be Invited bv other organizations in various cities," I feei It a duty to send out this word of caution about him. Very truly yours Martin Meyer. 40. President Harding is a sincere Chris- i tian. Yet, when he wished to summarize In the fewest possible words his duly and that of the cation be went to the Old Testament, the Bible of the Jews for his text, "What does the Lord require of thee but to do Justice, to love mercy and to walk i humbly with God." i The Christian Science Monitor, the' daily paper published by that denoml-j nation In BOEton, seems Inclined toj take Henry Ford's preposterous story 1 of the Jewish Peril myth seriously. This Is not at all surprising, for when anyone has swallowed the Christian Science theory, his gullet has been stretched so wide that anything else will go down easily. Not since the Middle Ages, which by-the-way, Mr.

Chesterton declares to nave been "the golden age of humanity," have the Jews been made the victims of such unspeakable brutalities and In so many countries as in this, the second decade of the twentieth century. Mr. Chesterton might make a note of the fact that the persecutors of Jews In both eras were fellow-members of the church whose glory he Is proud to acclaim. Not only the Itoman Catholic Church, hut Hie American people and humanity at large sustained a loss in the dentil of Cardinal James Gibbons at Baltimore last week. Cardlnul Gibbons was a humanitarian, a broad-minded statesman, patriot and a lover of mankind.

He was singularly free from race and religious prejudices and always stood for what was fair and decorous. His death leaves a vacancy Hut will not easily be filled. The rejoicing of those who are op-posed to the adoption of a drastic Immigrant bill, Is premature. True, the one passed by overwhelming majorities In both Houses of the late Congress, was killed through President Wilson's pocket veto. However, there lx Utile reason to doubt that a new, possibly more drastic bill will bo Introduced Immediately on the assembling of the new Congress on April 11 and again passed by a large majority.

Chesterton pronounces the Middle Ages to have been the Golden Age of Humanity, probably because during that period the Church which he honors with his affiliation was supreme during that period. The non-Catholic portion of mankind, however, calls that period (500 to 1500) the Dark Ages, because then the bulk of mankind were the serfs of feudal overlords and hierarchies, the slaves of superstition and Ignorance. But Mr. Chesterton has found out it pays to be different and ho Is working that vein for all tliat It is worth. Two occurrences which recently took place in Buffalo, N.

may be taken as a significant Index of the manner In which many Christian friends are going out of their beaten path to prove their right attitude toward the Jewish people. The first of these was a spe cial Botnvy Club Service in Temple Beth Zlon by suggestion of the club directors, the 'President of the Club, George Dlelil. sitting on the pulpit due- lag the service. The second significant Incident was an invitation issued dj the Minister of the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, one of the foremost and largest In Buffalo, to the members and ltabbl of Beth Zlon Congregation to participate In a special service to be held in that church on Sunday evening, April 24th, at which the minister of Lafayette Church and Rabbi Louts J. Kopnld are to be the speakers.

The invitation suggests that the church officers will be very pleased If the members of Temple Beth Zlon will remain after the service and meet rtlie members of Lafayette Church so-j The London Jewish Guardian Is nor inclined to take r. Iv. Chesterton, the English author who recently has been lecturing in the I'nited States, very1 seriously as an tnti-Semlte, or any-. thing else. It says of him: -On the whole, it would appear that Mr.

Chesterton is as tired of the Jews a the Jews are tired of Mr. Chesterton. Since he has discovered that the Protocols are a and tliat the 'Jewish conspiracy" is 'subconscious' and (a variety of conspiracy which has cc-t come into our since he has discovered, fur- ther. that the Homing Post Is a paper telling a half truth, which is turned into a ar.d that 'it does not understand the Jewish question' (which is really a little hard on the Morning Post, after Its frantic effort at elucidation), there seems little left for Mr. Chesterton except to throw himself into the arms of the gutter anti-Semites.

And. honestly, we think he is too good for that. So we may leave him to cherish his dislike of Sir Herbert Sf-muel. which he bases on the inappropriate plea that he does 'not care for millionaire The whole tiiDg is an instance of misdre." In a recent letter Itabhl Sidney S. Tedesche of San Antoalo, Texas, called the attention of Jesse L.

Lasky, vice-president of the Famous Players and Lasky Corporation, which puts out the Paramount and Ancraft Pictures, to a character in the film play, "The Froniler of the Stars," which is the Kagin ryo of Jew, which Rabbi Tedesrhe considered a moral perversion. He also pointed out the Injustice of such an act. especially wiiea abetted by Jew.s. In reply Mr. Lasky wrote as follows: ltabbi Sidney S.

Tedesche, San Antonio, Texas. Reverend Sir: I am in receipt of your letter of February 1-1, and, frankly. I appreciated very much your stralght-from-the-shoulder remarks. It is rteverjhe Intention of this company to hold up any sect or religion to ridicule, and the character you mentioned, In "The Frontier of the Stars," was one of those incidents that sometimes escape even the most rigid supervision. I am making capital out of your letter, however, by circulating it among the authors and directors.

Your remarks on censorship were also most pertinent, and I rather agree with your viewpoint- I am now devoting most of my time in striving for a higher moral tone la pictures, and I am happy to assure you that I am meeting with the utmost co-operation from not alone the various executives and members of our producing organization but from other companies as well. Again thanking you for your letter. I am, Yours very truly, Jesse L. Lasky. Whether or not this will have any effect remains to be seen.

The position of President of the Hebrew Union College is the most Important In Reform Judaism, as It constituted today. Jo one will have a greater influence on the future of American Tdafsm than the man who presides over the Institution that trains Its rabbis. His selection should, therefore, be a matter of careful deliberation. Dr. Kohler, the retiring head of the institution can well remain In office for some time to come.

In any event, the selection of his successor should not be made In Star Chamber sessions, and certainly not until after the forthcoming convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which Is to be held In Buffalo In May, shall have taken place. The list of available men should there bo placed before the convention, so tliat Its members, who In the final analysis must shape the policy of the Hebrew Union College and find means for Its support, may express their views and have an Influence, If not a voice In the final selection. It is to be hoped that the one finally determined upon for this most important post will be a native American and one In full sympathy with American Ideals, preferably an alumnus of the College itself. He should be neither a radical nor a duo-nationalist, nor one whose Judaism is merely academic. The selection of the future head of the Hebrew Union College places a grave responsibility, not only upon the Board of Governors, but upon the Executive Board of the Union, and It Is to be hoped that they will be equal to the most Important task tliat they have as yet been called upon to perform.

Last Saturday, March 20th, was the twenty-first anniversary of the death of Rnbbl Isaac M. Wise. In practically all of the congregations, something over two hundred, which are members of the Union of American Hebrew Coa-gregntlons, which the late Rabbi established, sermons were preached setting forth his work and worth, and Kaddish was said In his memory, in which the entire congregation standing. At the Hebrew Union College In Cincinnati, tho anniversary was celebrated as Founder's Day. The memorial sermon was preached this year by ltabbl Joseph Rauch, of Louisville, whose address was scholarly, well considered and appreciative.

Isaac M. Wise's work may be briefly snmmtt-rlzc(Jn3 the creation of Reform Judaism, that Is, of the adaptation of Judaism to its American environments without sacrificing any of its principles. For Its promulgation and maintenance three great Institutions, namely: The Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Hebrew Union College and the Central Conference of American Rabbis will provide. The work begun by him is now being carried on by a large number of capable and earnest workers and their number increases from year to year. The Reform Jews may -be, and probably are, In the minority In the United States just at present, the inflow from darkest Kurope during the last forty years has been sufficient to outnumber them.

This, however! Is but a temporary phase and In a few years or decades at most, American Reform Judaism will be the religion of the Jews of America and the work begun by Isaac Wise and now being carried on by something over two hundred of the disciples will have been successfully "America," a staunch Catholic Journal, Eays that Chesterton's charge that "Jews are Jens; and as a logical era-sequence that they are not Russians or Rumanians, Italians or Frenchmen or Englishmen," does no: justify the accusation that he is an anti-Semite. If "America logic is correct, then no Catholic Irishmen or their descendants can be Americans, yet those who are citizens claim to be and the Israelite Las always belieTed are. But it appears they are not and if they think they are, they are deceiving themselves according to "America." The New York papers report tliat a movement is on foot to establish a new national organization, to be called -The Jewish Valor Legion," to which only Jews who have won distinction during the late war shall be eligible. The need for an organization of this kind is not apparent and it is to he hoped tliat the attempt to form one will be a failure. The attempt probably originates with some Jews unknown to fame, who have a desire to get into the limelight- We have too many Jewish organizations as It is, and we want les3 rather than more.

The contest that Is now going on at various State capitals for the passage of a law giving the State control of all educational institutions, whether county, city or private. Is primarily aimed at the closing of the Soman Catholic parochial schools. The Jewish citizens -of the various States have no special Interest as Jews in these bills. We have no parochial schools. Our relig-' loos schools in which sessions are held on week days, teach only religion, Jewish history and Hebrew.

The hours are arranged so as not to conflict with the public school schedule, but none-tbe-Iess, the JsiLinjTD holds that the en-' actmect and enforcement of such a law would work a grave Injustice in many Instances. It maintains, however, tliat the State has the right. In fact, the; duty to Inspect and If necessary regu-' late all institutions within Its border. 1 Iteligious bigotry is not the exclusive i possession of the ultra-orthodox Chris-; tian churches. Rabbi Shemtob Gagu-' ine, the bead of the Ecclesiastical Court of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation In London, has decided that the son of a Jew and a non-Jew-; ess, though brought up as a Jew, Is not legally a Jew and his being called up to the reading of the Torah was un-; lawful.

He, also, decided that while intermarriages between Jews and Christians were valid according to the law of the country, they were invalid according to Jewish law. It Is hardly necessary to say that American He-; form Judaism has rid itself of the form of medievalism would re-; fuse the acceptance as a Jew of a man or woman who was reared as a Jew and wishes to remain one, because the mother was not a Jewess, though the father was a Jew. The Ministerial Alliance of Lawrence, Kansas, and other Christian brotherhoods and societies are preparing to present to Governor Henry Allen petitions asking that the State censor eliminate from the Dims the propaganda now being carried on In which Protestant ministers are always pictured in an unfavorable light, which Is all right. But when It adds, "the evident purpose being to undermine the church Itself," It Is to laugh. The moving picture producer has Just as much of an Idea of upsetting the government as he has of undermining the church.

In fact, for pretty much all of them, at least such as are Protestants and Jews, the church does not exist, liesldes, It is not the Protestant minister that Is being pictured in an unfavorable light to any extent. It Is usually the prohibition agent, though sometimes he Is In ministerial garb. ltabbl Martin A. Meyer, of San Francisco, writes the Isuaeliti: that In the course of a lecture given by Poultney Biglow before the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, he not only abused-the IrlBh and Catholics, but also grossly Insulted the Jews. Mr.

Biglow In his earlier days was a writer of much merit, but unfortunately for him he was presented to the former Emperor of Germany and permitted to kiss his hand. He straightway became one of Kaiser Wilhelm's llcksplttels and to all Intents and purposes a Prussian. After the Kaiser's debacle, Mr. Big-low's feelings underwent a revulsion and ho lost no opportunity for abusing his former idol. What Jlr.

Biglow eays or leaves unsaid is of no very great Importance, but It is of Importance that no organization of acknowledged public standing should give lnm the opportunity of spreading his venom. The Herald and Presbyter republishes an oxcorpt from The Western Recorder which reads as follows: "Wo have received a publication Issued by a committee of Jews in New York, the purpose of which Is defensive propaganda. If the Jews get In bad repute in America it will bo their own fault. As a general proposition, America has felt kindly toward this remarkable race. They have been persecuted In many nations.

America gave them retugo, liberty and opportunity. Very well, now let the Jew stop his effort to destroy the American Sabbath. Let him cease to prostitute the American theaters and motion pictures he controls, to the undermining of the character of America's youth." It Is surprising that so fair-minded a paper as the Herald and Presbyter usually is does not see the injustice of this article. It ought to know that out of the three and one-hnlf millions of Jews In the United (States, the largo majority keep tbelr places of business closed and abstain from following their usual vocations on Sundays and meticulously avoid doing anything tliat might annoy their Christian neighbors on that day. There are perhaps a dozen, twoor throe dozens at the very most, American theatrical manogcrs and picture play producers, who are Jews by faith, why saddle their shortcomings upon the entire ujion HOW HATRED OF THE JEWS IS FOSTERED.

Attacks on the Jews in newspapers, magazines and books of general circulation are of little real consequence because publications of that character are read by people of intelligence who are quite capable of forming their own opinions independently of outside assistance. However, with religious and clas? publications and newspapers with a local circulation only, it is a different story, while the preaching of the doctrines of hate in the churches in remote or isolated communities Is the real evil. Many accounts of this pernicious practice come to this office and the following from the Tulsa (Okla.) Daily World Is a fair sample If the clock ot time were turned back to the zero hour 2,000 years ago, the people who today wilfully reject Jesus Christ would be found In the mob at his crucifixion, charged Rev. W. H.

Murphy, at a revival servire at the Second Prcsbyterinn church. His words were: "The Jews took Jesus out and nailed him to the cross, they crucified the savior that God bad sent into the world to seek and to save tne lost If you refuse to accept him, you become a participant in the most brutal tragedy that the hands of man ever committed and the eye of God ever witnessed. If you refuse to accept Jesus Christ you lend your voice to the mob of blood-thirsty criminals that cried out, "Crucify him" and the blood of Jesus Christ is on your hands just as much as It was on the hands of the Jews that nailed lilm to the cross. I want to lead Jesus out on this platform tonight and say to you, "Behold the lamb of God." I want you to accept him as the lamb of God that taketh away tho sins of the world. If you do not accept him tliat means you are turning your back on God Almighty and flinging an Insult In his face by saying, "I won't have ans-thlng to do with thine only begotten LISTENING TO MUSIC NOT AN AMUSEMENT.

At the regular annual meeting of the United Synagog of America, held In New York City last month, Prof. Louis Ginsberg, one of the vice presidents. In the course of an address, declared that listening to music was not an amusement from which mourners were deprived by Jewish custom. Prof. Ginsberg said, in part: "Judaism lays great stress upon the hoaor and respect due to tho dead, and many of the Jewish customs of mourning have greatly contributed towards developing the family spirit of the Jew, one of his greatest treasures.

We must be, however, on our guard that sentiment does not degenerate Into sentimentality, and custom into superstititlon. A few weeks ago the principal of a large public school In New York City asked to be advised whether the Jewish law prohibits school children In mourning from attending assembly, on account of the musical part thereof. Your committee decided that Insofar as the assembly period and the music hour were part of the regular curiculum of study, there can be no objection to having tho children in mourning attend. It is a beautiful Jewish custom that one ia mourning should abstain from amusements, but I would like to see the child who enjoys the music he has to attend." Prof. Ginsberg is probably right, as far as the children are concerned, and if la the case of the adults he refers to music generally given by symphony orchestras, he is also not very far wrong.
